Montmorency 'Doily' Butterbean is a well-cushioned halfling chef in the employ of Annetta von Loningheim, a merchant whose well-to-do family is rather less well these days and in need of new markets, stat. He is 3'2" tall, and excels in Trade (Cook) and Sleight of Hand. This being Warhammer, that means he has exactly a 50% chance of succeeding at either. As a servant, he isn't mechanically <i>allowed</i> to learn fighting, and he's also as burly as a particularly malnourished dishrag, so hopefully this campaign in the notoriously peaceful setting of, er, The Old World, will revolve around square meals and petty theft.</p>
<h3>Session the First</h3>
<p>It’s Jahrdrung, and through some curious benediction of Sigmar, it’s <i>not raining</i>. We converge on the nearest coaching inn for our various reasons. M’lady Annetta von Loningheim is en route to Altdorf on the family’s behalf, so, so is my humble self. Our travelling-companions include a stern gentleman calling himself Barnabus Sommerfeld, Karl the docker, and a rough-looking guard called Werther. We're still in plenty of time to catch the Four Seasons line carriage heading for Altdorf.
</p>
<p>
The aforesaid coach accelerates out of the gate as we approach, much to our discomfort. It pays no heed to our pleas and indeed, the chap on top waves his blunderbuss at Werther to get him out of the path. We’re peeved. Distinctly peeved.
</p>
<p>
Inside the fence, there’s a sign for Ratchet Lines the coach company. The porter says the coach is trying to make up time after breaking a wheel earlier in the day. They’re aiming for Middenheim but won’t get there any time soon, least of all by night. There’s coachmen inside having a drink and a bite to eat - employees of the Ratchet Line, a rival firm. A finely-dressed young woman with a beefy female bodyguard and a possible governess. A young scholar of some kind. A fancy chap at the bar, with an evaluating eye. There’s a landlord with a pet crow, Gustav.
</p>
<p>
Werther manages to haggle the coachmen into getting a cheap journey on the next morning's coach. They're stubborn folk, largely because they have devised a nigh-flawless system of converting coach tickets into money and the latter seamlessly into ale. One ticket, as they point out, is therefore worth eight flagons of ale. Mistress easily convinces the landlord to give her a good deal on the rooms, and after Doily pointed out the distinct lack of a chef, he was happy enough (or wise enough) to let the halfling take over the kitchen. Much clattering of pots and pans ensues, mostly of Karl helping wash up.
</p>
<p>
The fancy chap wanders over and makes small talk, before producing a deck of cards with which he is noticeably clumsy. Surely, an innocent fellow merely in search of entertainment. Alas, none of us are at the juxtaposition of willingness to play and possessed of any coin, while the stranger can’t foresee any pleasure in a game without stakes. ‘Tis like that parable with the comb, the pocket watch, and the priest of Sigmar’s trousers.
</p>
<p>
Narrowly avoiding setting the place ablaze, Doily rustles up a decent meal. In the course of feeding it to the tipsy coachmen, he convinces them that they forgot to give him his ticket. Twice. Awfully careless of ‘em, good thing he was around to jog their memories. He keeps them supplied with hearty food and encourages the landlord to keep their beers coming. Everyone knows you drive better with a hangover.
</p>
<p>
By the end of the evening, Barnabus has pointed out the importance of a blessing for a safe coach journey and that they don’t seem to have the right number of tickets vs. schillings, while Doily has paid an honest two schillings for his, er, three tickets, and rustled up a damn fine breakfast (and some snacks to keep them going on the way). His capacious pockets are <i>not</i> full of ill-gotten turnips, and no you may not look inside them. The very idea!
</p>
<p>
The journey is uneventful, and damp. It’s dark by the time we get to our intended inn - which proves to be tied to the Four Seasons, so as Ratchet Line travellers, we can’t go there! We reluctantly continue further on, and round a bend to find a humanoid figure crouched over a limp body. It turns round, revealing – oh horror! - a human hand within its mouth!
</p>
<p>
The figure rushes towards us, green gunk dripping from its eyes. Karl gives a cry of horrified recognition – “Rolph!” as it charges. The horses panic and bolt, but Gunnar slams the brakes down – the reins snap and the beasts flee, Holtz still hanging on for dear life.
</p>
<p>
Everyone leaps to the coach’s defence, although in Doily’s case it involves flinging hat-boxes (belonging to the other lady, who will be miffed – Sigmar forbid he thrown her Ladyship’s property around!). This is a less than effective method of combat, but it does have the enormous advantage of keeping him at the greatest possible distance from the cannibal. Our would-be witch-hunter finishes it off, skewering the accursed thing with his sword.
</p>
<h3>Session the Second</h3>
<p>
Werther and Barnabus immediately rush after the horses. They hears something crashing through the undergrowth and a bestial cry. A figure bursts out and calls “it’s me! don’t shoot!”. It’s Holtz, somewhat the worse for wear.
There’s another coach around the corner, on its side. It's the Four Seasons line, perhaps the very one that barged past us last night! Two horses are trying to break free. Something with huge muscles is swiping at them with an axe. There are bodies everywhere. The scream comes from the dog-headed, wounded man next to the carriage; another mutant is trying to bandage it. A fourth else is rummaging through bodies, and a fifth taking a quick ‘snack’ on one of those selfsame bodies.
</p>
<p>
After a hurried (well, somewhat hurried. Hurried in a leisurely sort of fashion, one might say) discussion, some of us start sneaking towards them while Karl acts as a distraction. Werther is not terribly stealthy, however – or perhaps rather better said, is terribly stealthy – and draws their attention.
</p>
<p>Sneaking up to the “medic”, Doily flings a rock – which misses dramatically, bounces off the carriage wheel, and catches him in the eye as he turns to look at it. Already injured, it’s too much for him and he keels over.
Meanwhile, Werther fells the largest of them – a hulk of a man with a tiny head – with a single flawless swing of his warhammer, caving in its arm and sternum. He fixes the other with a ferocious glare, and it pegs it in the opposite direction. The leader tries to aim a crossbow at Barnabus, shakes so badly that the bolt falls out, and also flees.
</p>
<p>
Much circumspection is employed in approaching the carriage, lest something ‘orrible, or some jittery crossbow-wielding survivor, be crouching there. It proves unnecessary. Inside the carriage are two bodies, one of whom looks a lot like Barnabus, though in less witch-huntery-y clothes. Both are dead. The other bodies nearby seem to be assorted artisans and a coachman, and all are equally dead – and, perhaps worse, apparently pre-plundered by the leader who has already fled the scene, the miserable thieving scoundrel.
</p>
<p>
After calming down the horses, we look around and spot our own grazing nearby. Our coachmen are able to coax them back, and use them to bring our coach up to this one. A few other passengers reluctantly disembark to help us right the fallen coach (well, I say “us”). The chap inside is a spitting image of our Barnabus and has a rather bloodstained parchment - a letter from a lawyer, stating he’s the last heir to an enormous fortune. Poor bloke, eh? There is much debate between our small group as to what should be done, which ends with Barnabus nobly agreeing to take care of the lawyer's letter, a couple of sworn affidavits, and other important legal papers that one wouldn't want to see getting misplaced or accidentally interred along with all these corpses.
</p>
<p>
Hooves thunder and a patrol of road wardens arrive. They ask a few questions but are convinced by the evidence of the dead beastmen. They escort us to the next inn, where there’s gossip about a minor nobleman being condemned for witchcraft, having repeatedly been heard exhorting his mischievous cat to “drink his bloody milk in Hell’s name”. What a terrible waste of good milk.
</p>
<p>
At last, we see the spires of Altdorf arising in the distance. It’s huge! The vast Wolf Gate is being maintained, but still magnificent beneath all the scaffolding. We feel a sense of relief at safely arriving at last.

So with one thing and another, I was checking some details of the early campaign timeline and wanted to check which episode something appeared in.
</p>
<p>
Answer: it didn't!
</p>
<p>
I spent ages going back and forth trying to work out if we'd just done the prewritten island section wildly out of order. Nope. One episode finishes, the next opens with the PCs midway through exploring a ruined temple. Now, this was definitely wrong.
</p>
<p>
So I've dug deep into my old backups, and found some stray VRF files from back when we were still using Ventrilo to record. The dates didn't match any of the existing episodes either, but sat between them. Now I just had to open them and check the contents.
</p>
<p>
VRF files though.
</p>
<p>
Nothing opens VRF files. Audacity will import them - as a hideous, howling, screeching blare. So I reinstalled Ventrilo, pulled a couple of files in and exported them. Long, silent .wavs ensued. Large .wavs, mind you - deliciously datalicious .wavs. But silent nonetheless.
</p>
<p>
After quite a long time faffing about, I installed the 32-bit version of Vent through Wine on my Linux Thinkpad, moved the VRFs across, and was able to extract them to something usable.
</p>
<p>
So it turns out there are three sessions that just went missing, and I'm going to need to edit them and reorder all the existing episodes from 14 onwards. Fun times. Also, these are back in the Dark Times of single-track recording (why, Vent, why, everyone is already sending info on a different channel T_T) and Ollie being some kind of audio vampire who doesn't show up in recordings. I have the greatest respect for anyone not involved who accepts these tribulations and nevertheless wades through.
</p>
<p>
So, new episodes will take longer than planned, and I'm afraid the existing RSS feed might get messed up when I rerelease the renumbered ones. My apologies.

I released a new thing!
</p>
<p>
<a href="https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/455971/Phantoms-Inglenooks-Guides">Inglenook's Know Your Phantoms</a> has a bunch of archetypes for phantoms, which as far as I know(?) haven't been done before. Certainly the're nothing official. It's also got the usual scattering of feats, traits, spells, etc. Let's share the blurb:
</p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0h_VuEtfTX4INQ-bKdP2ofjgTdj8CTlnbaHTyj0Iyy0chpyVZ-VKUDOz_7BbVtOfKNs27dlfawkRD-sIX_l1wYSyxl7zbyNysGCRtyiwndCGc2zn-So72fuHH7rbh_Qtot2x0cH4jFCrApQ2Gd2-fdsvwR3mhiElh9qBvJWbE53fi8fQr_TMBbv3qNEM/s1273/Phantoms%20cover%20DTRPG%2002.png" style="display: block; padding: 1em 0; text-align: center; "><img alt="" border="0" height="400" data-original-height="1273" data-original-width="900" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0h_VuEtfTX4INQ-bKdP2ofjgTdj8CTlnbaHTyj0Iyy0chpyVZ-VKUDOz_7BbVtOfKNs27dlfawkRD-sIX_l1wYSyxl7zbyNysGCRtyiwndCGc2zn-So72fuHH7rbh_Qtot2x0cH4jFCrApQ2Gd2-fdsvwR3mhiElh9qBvJWbE53fi8fQr_TMBbv3qNEM/s400/Phantoms%20cover%20DTRPG%2002.png"/></a></div>
<a name='more'></a>
<p>
A supplement for Pathfinder 1st edition, introducing a range of archetypes for the spiritualist's phantom, as well as 12 spells, 24 feats, and new traits.
</p>
<p>
Why be satisfied with a plain old phantom? Meet the Horological Phantom whose strength is tied to the hour of its demise, with corresponding powers and weaknesses. Summon an Ephemeral Phantom with a moment's thought, but don't expect it to stick around. Let a Guiding Phantom serve you with wisdom and advice, or a Phantom-at-Arms meet your enemies with spectral steel! The Timeless Phantom has knowledge of future technologies, while the Ghost Soldier clings to the spectre of her trusty rifle and sends enemies running for cover. Let your phantom's power spill over into you as a Phantom Host, becoming a mixture of spiritualist and medium; or call up a Faded Phantom as a near-invisible ally. If your own passions are strong enough, become a Wilful Spiritualist with an unusually rational phantom. And don't forget the Hungering Phantom, relying on stolen emotion to sustain itself and equipped with a terrible bite.
</p>
<p>
Explore little-known emotional foci, such as Loneliness, Ennui, Inquisitiveness, Paranoia, Nostalgia, and of course, sheer Bloody-Mindedness. Existing feats and spells have been expanded to cover these new options.
</p>
<p>
The book includes feats dedicated to specific emotional foci, as well as the quintessentialist and zeitgeist binder.
</p>
<p>
New traits can bolster the onmyoji and phantom blade archetypes, help in maintaining tethers, speed up phantom summoning, heal your phantom more easily, let you craft a variety of thematic items, and more.
</p>
<p>
In other news, I've added a link on the blog to my <a href="https://bit.ly/LNLArtWishlist">stock art wishlist</a>. I don't generally buy art for my supplements because I'm already not making money on them. It's hard to justify it as a pure expenditure that perhaps twenty other people will see. Still, art is nice. If anyone feels like leaving a tip, consider buying me a piece of affordable stock art to use in beautifying my work.

The hunter class is distinguished by its ability to assume animal aspects through the animal focus ability. Several archetypes offer alternative aspects, but some of these are difficult to reconcile with the theme of the archetype. Additionally, the archetype aspects are sometimes highly situational compared to the aspects available to the core class, making the archetype less appealing. It's not surprising; after all, you tend to start with the obvious and generic abilities, then go for increasingly niche choices as you try to add more options. It's a "difficult second album" situation. This is an attempt to address that by offering an alternative set of aspects for hunter archetypes.
</p>
<a name='more'></a>
<h3>
Courtly Hunter
</h3>
<p>
<i>While most hunters find themselves at ease in the wildest parts of the world, <a href="https://aonprd.com/ArchetypeDisplay.aspx?FixedName=Hunter%20Courtly%20Hunter">courtly hunters</a> instead make their homes in cultured urban environments. They and their animal companions are more refined than typical hunters, using their skills to navigate the winding paths of courtly intrigue as surely as other hunters find trails in the wilderness.</i>
</p>
<p>
While I like the concept, I find it hard to reconcile the themes of court intrigue, ‘cultured’ and ‘refined’ with the beaver, frilled lizard, octopus and raccoon. In addition, the courtly hunter is significantly weakened by losing all of the attribute-boosting aspects, which are the most flexible and widely applicable, as well as being useful in combat. With the loss of teamwork feats and precise companion as well, the courtly hunter suffers a huge reduction in combat effectiveness in exchange for a boost in skills that’s modest for the hunter; the companion sees a much larger increase in skills, but is of course more restricted in using them. Ironically the companion could have benefited from a number of non-combat teamwork feats.
</p>
<p>
I’ve renamed the beaver, frilled lizard and raccoon after animals that seem to better fit the refined and noble theme of the archetype. The regal tiger is back, replacing that timeless emblem of aristocracy, the, uh, octopus. This was to a large extent because Escape Artist may be intrigue-themed, but it isn’t really befitting a member of the nobility. At the same time, Dexterity is valuable in combat, and offers benefits of grace and poise that do fit the courtly social scene. Similarly, the elephant is associated with nobility so I’ve offered it as a Strength-based replacement for the chamaeleon. Disguise isn’t really what the toffs do – what’s the point of being important if nobody knows?
</p>
<p>
Refined Focus (Su): A courtly hunter has access to a different set of animal aspects with her animal focus. She does not gain access to the bear, bull, frog, monkey, snake, stag, tiger, or wolf aspects. Instead, she gains access to the following aspects.
</p>
<p>
<i>Bowerbird:</i> The creature gains a +4 competence bonus on Craft checks. This bonus increases to +6 at 8th level and +8 at 15th level.
</p>
<p>
<i>Eagle:</i> The creature gains a +2 enhancement bonus to Charisma. This bonus increases to +4 at 8th level and +6 at 15th level.
</p>
<p>
<i>Elephant:</i> The creature gains a +2 enhancement bonus to Strength. This bonus increases to +4 at 8th level and +6 at 15th level.
</p>
<p>
<i>Fox:</i> The creature gains a +4 competence bonus on Bluff checks. This bonus increases to +6 at 8th level and +8 at 15th level.
</p>
<p>
<i>Lion:</i> The creature gains a +4 competence bonus on Intimidate checks. This bonus increases to +6 at 8th level and +8 at 15th level.
</p>
<p>
<i>Magpie:</i> The creature gains a +4 competence bonus on Sleight of Hand checks. This bonus increases to +6 at 8th level and +8 at 15th level.
</p>
<p>
<i>Songbird:</i> The creature gains a +4 competence bonus on Perform checks. This bonus increases to +6 at 8th level and +8 at 15th level.
</p>
<p>
<i>Tiger:</i> The creature gains a +2 enhancement bonus to Dexterity. This bonus increases to +4 at 8th level and +6 at 15th level.
</p>
<p>
This ability alters animal focus.
</p>
<h3>
Plant Master
</h3>
<p>
<i>Some hunters form a bond with plant life instead of an animal and take on those aspects instead. These hunters form potent bonds with plant creatures, and their leafy or fungal friends are more than capable of anything another hunter’s animal allies can accomplish.</i>
</p>
<p>
It’s worth noting that the <a href="https://aonprd.com/ArchetypeDisplay.aspx?FixedName=Hunter%20Plant%20Master">plant master archetype</a> replaces animal focus, but doesn’t mention second and third animal focus <b>at all</b>. Presumably the intention is to replace them with second and third plant focus rather than removing those abilities. In this archetype, the aspects are again rather situational and lack any general-purpose options, while some seem a bit tenuous. Can we really say that a spore has flying capabilities? Are water lilies actually notable for their swimming skills?
</p>
<p>
The bramble is a nice concept and offers something genuinely different; however, I’m concerned that this very limited damage will become irrelevant quickly in the face of damage reduction, not to mention ever-increasing hit points. Unlike the attribute-boosting aspects, there’s no handy 2nd-level spells to use as comparison – thorn body is a 4th-level spell and its duration is in rounds per level. The closest approximation is probably the pyrokineticist’s searing flesh talent, which offers 1/4 level in damage, but can be powered up through accepting burn and probably will be. An 8th-level kineticist will likely have at least a couple of points of burn invested in defence, giving 3 damage most of the time, and twice that at 15th level. I replaced this with a poison-themed ability inspired by the bitter pill alchemist talent. The doubling up of damage <b>and</b> sickening is compensated by the saving throw, and the vast number of things that are totally immune to poison.
</p>
<p>
The assassin vine fares appallingly in comparison to the mantis, leech, mongoose, scorpion, octopus.. everything, in fact. Not only is its grapple bonus lower (+2, +3, +4 versus +2, +4, +6) but it doesn’t gain a secondary benefit, unlike all of the others. I’ve added a minor damage boost during grapples to compensate and to more strongly mirror the plant.
</p>
<p>
The giant flytrap is a nice choice, but when I think of a giant flytrap devouring animals, “stealth” isn’t the concept that comes to mind. I’ve reduced the Stealth bonus and added a bonus on attacks of opportunity instead, reflecting the plant’s ability to snap shut on unwary passers-by.
</p>
<p>
I replaced the water lily with the virtually-unkillable rhododendron. This won’t make a hunter particularly deadly in combat, but does help them to stay alive.
</p>
<p>
Plant Focus (Su): A plant master can take on the aspect of a plant as a swift action. He must select one type of plant to emulate, gaining a bonus or special ability based on the type of plant emulated and his hunter level. The plant master can use this ability for a number of minutes per day equal to his level. This duration does not need to be consecutive but must be spent in 1-minute increments. He can emulate only one plant at a time.
</p>
<p>
The plant master can also apply one of these aspects to his plant companion. An aspect applied in this way does not count against the hunter’s minutes of duration per day—it remains in effect until he changes it. The companion’s aspect can be the same aspect the hunter has taken on or a different one. A plant master can select or change the plant foci on both himself and his plant companion as part of the same swift action.
</p>
<p>
<i>Assassin Vine:</i> The creature gains a +2 bonus on combat maneuver checks to grapple and damage rolls to deal damage with a successful grapple check. This bonus increases to +4 at 8th level and +6 at 15th level.
</p>
<p>
<i>Creeping Vine:</i> The creature gains a +4 competence bonus on Climb checks. This bonus increases to +6 at 8th level and +8 at 15th level.
</p>
<p>
<i>Giant Flytrap:</i> The creature gains a +2 competence bonus on Stealth checks and on attack rolls when making attacks of opportunity. This bonus increases to +4 at 8th level and +6 at 15th level.
</p>
<p>
<i>Mushroom:</i> The creature gains a +4 enhancement bonus on saves against poison. This bonus increases to +6 at 8th level and +8 at 15th level.
</p>
<p>
<i>Nightshade:</i> When the creature is hit by an unarmed strike or natural attack, the attacker gains the sickened condition for 1 round unless it succeeds at a Fortitude save (DC = 10 + half the hunter’s level + the hunter’s Wisdom modifier). If the attacker used a bite attack, it also suffers d6 damage (halved on a successful save), which is not subject to damage reduction. This is a poison effect. At 8th and 15th level, the duration increases by 1 round and the damage by 1d4.
</p>
<p>
<i>Oak:</i> The creature gains a +2 enhancement bonus to CMD. This bonus increases to +4 at 8th level and +6 at 15th level.
</p>
<p>
<i>Rhododendron:</i> The creature automatically stabilizes if reduced below 0 hit points, and increases its natural healing rate to 2 points per level. At 8th level, it adds its character level to its maximum negative hit points before death.
</p>
<p>
<i>Shrieker: </i>The creature gains darkvision with a range of 60 feet. At 8th level, the range increases by 30 feet. At 15th level, the creature also gains blindsense with a range of 10 feet.
</p>
<p>
This replaces animal focus.
</p>
<br/>
<p>
I might add more ideas later on, but I've had these sitting around for a while and they ain't gonna get <i>more</i> topical now the second edition of Pathfinder is out. I admit, that has significantly dented my enthusiasm for finishing the many, many Pathfinder 1e-related things I got partway through writing. Particularly the ones intended for publication. Is there still much enthusiasm for the game out there, outside me?

<p>
I had thought about this before the session, and had some idea what the creatures' civilization would look like, but a lot of this was improvised. Luckily, I'd already planned out an approximation of what the creatures were and what was going on with them when I was planning the journey into the Nameless City. This was a chance to share some of my thoughts with a player, which is always fun.

For various reasons, I've been messing about with GURPS abilities, and finding the multiple, incompatible types of range a bit of a pain. There's standard ranges, spell ranges, scrying ranges, scanning sense ranges, melee ranges, hard-cutoff ranges, and of course, Warp. They all work differently, too. Sometimes - especially for linked abilities, or alternate abilities - you want to make things with one type of range work like another. So let's give that a try.
</p>
<p>
Let's say we want to reduce our range to 10 - the same as Telekinesis and a convenient range for other fixed-range modifications. For a generic ability, range is 100 and 1/2D is 10. We need these to be the same. Reduced Range (p. B115) bans us from reducing Max independently for some reason, while Increased Range is happy to let us increase 1/2D alone at half cost. This will cost us +15%. We also reduce range overall to 10 yards, for -30%. Thus, switching from a standard range to a flat 10-yard range is a net +0%.
</p>
<p>
If we ignore the "no reducing Max" rule, we could simply reduce Max at half cost, for an overall -15% modifier. So it works out the same. Nice.
</p>
<p>
What about Maledictions and spells, the other common pattern? These have <i>no</i> maximum range, but a -1 penalty per yard. For this, we can add Long-Range (+50%) to switch it to using the standard range modifiers. This gives a net +35% for switching to a 10-yard range.
</p>
<p>
Those spells that use the Long-Range Modifiers instead get Short-Range, which at -10% will give us a net -25%.
</p>
<p>
....okay, so what about Warp? Warp has its own unique range table, because <i>of course</i> it does! On closer inspection, the first few steps of each table are <i>wildly</i> different, but they end up virtually the same. </p>
<ul>
<li>
Long-Range Modifiers begin at 200 yards, then go 1/2 mile (880 yards), 1 mile, 3 miles, 10 miles, 30 miles, 100 miles, 300 miles, 1000 miles, and then in multiples of 10.
</li>
<li>Warp goes 10, 20, 100, 500, then 2 miles, 10 miles, and then im multiples of 10.
</li>
</ul>
<p>
We hit 1,000 miles at -7 for the Warp table, and -8 for the Long-Range table. After that it's plain sailing. So... Warp has a steeper initial curve, but flattens out sooner than Long-Range. It's more challenging at short ranges, but less challenging at long ranges. Honestly, I'm inclined to say these are functionally equal. In theory allowing someone to switch to the Warp ranges would make very long-range activity slightly easier. Realistically speaking, though, I'd be far more worried about better accuracy for short-to-mid-range abilities, especially attacks - which would be a case of switching <i>from</i> the Warp table <i>to</i> the Long-Range table. Since no attack abilities use the Warp modifiers, that's not a concern. The fact that someone could switch to be better at (say) scrying on someone from 10,000 miles away, at the cost of being much worse at doing so from any lesser distance, doesn't seem like a huge deal to me.
</p>
<p>
The only real issue I can see is that allowing Warp to switch to Long-Range modifiers would open the door to adding Long-Range 1 (from Power-Ups 4: Enhancements) and removing the range penalties altogether. Is that really a problem, though? It'll cost you +50%, which is generally 50 points. For the same price, you could buy a +10 to your rolls, or +5 and No Strain to avoid the risk of critical failures. We could also simply forbid the use of Long-Range on Warp, if we're that worried.
</p>
<p>
But there's an easier way to deal with our <i>actual</i> challenge here, which is the range limits. Range Limit lets us cap our Warp. It's -50% for a 10-yard range. Perfect.
</p>
<p>
So, we conclude that you can make a standard Innate Attack or Affliction into a 10-yard effect at -15%, a Malediction or spell for -+35%, and a Long-Range ability for -25%, while Warp gets -50%.
</p>
<p>
If we want a fixed radius with no range penalties, we can add Reliable 4 (Only to cancel range penalties, -50%) for +10%.
</p>
<p>
If we'd like to use something like the Psionic Range Table (<i>GURPS Psionic Powers</i>, p. 22) we can adjust the multipliers.

<p>
The job of the GM is to cunningly predict the players' every move, weaving a seamless web of continuity that will accommodate their whims. This is, of course, impossible, but sometimes more impossible than others. In <a href="https://archive.org/download/lnl_pfrpg_necropolitans/L%26L%20Necropolitans%20038%20Well.%20That%20was%20unexpected.mp3">Episode 038: Well, that was unexpected</a>, Ollie managed to do something I absolutely had not even remotely anticipated.
</p>
<a name='more'></a>
<p>
Listeners will fairly soon be able to find out what happened to Makoa. For the other players, it was several months before they knew anything, since Ollie was keeping mum. Keeping secrets in games can work well or badly, but luckily this group handle it well.
</p>
<p>
I'm sure I did make up some of this in advance, but I feel like a lot of it was winged heavily on the fly - mostly because, again, players are always unexpected. Those poor GMs. Wait, that's me.

The random encounter has been a Thing in RPGs since at least the early days of <i>D&D</i>. Sometimes this makes more sense than others. Having your night's kip deep in the bowels of an abandoned cathedral crypt disturbed by prowling ghouls makes a fair amount of sense. Running into a manticore as you take the rough cart track from a farming village to the market town, not so much.
</p>
<p>
Like most parts of gaming, this is fine in moderation and in the hands of a judicious GM who thinks about the context. But that's not a very exciting statement, so let's have a further look at random encounters.
</p>
<a name='more'></a>
<p>
Random encounters do a few things. They can add a sense of unpredictability (sometimes too much) to an adventure, whether it's stopping a prewritten scenario from feeling bland, or throwing another element into the mix of a GM's improvisation. Narratively, they make the world feel more perilous, especially when the resulting encounters aren't necessarily tailored to the PCs' capabilities - as with the classic Random Encounter Tables. You know... "1d3 filthy hobbits with a stick", "a tired orc", "1d6 tyrannosaur assassins". This mechanically encourages players to arrange watches, find safe-ish places to set up camp, and so on.
</p>
<p>
The problem you can end up with is that the world feels <b>too</b> dangerous, narratively speaking. This is more an issue for the folks who like reasonably consistent models (are we still saying "simulationist"?), because in a narrative-first system, the danger presented by monster A to person B is generally much looser.
</p>
<p>
To put it bluntly: if you might be devoured by owlbears any time you try to sell eggs, how does any form of civilisation exist? Movement of goods and people are crucial to the kinds of societies we generally see in RPGs. Cities <b>absolutely require</b> materials and food gathered from the surrounding countryside, and the goods they produce are sold to that same countryside. Sure, your classic merchant caravan can hire 4-6 low-level adventurers to fend off bandits. How does that work on the smaller scale, though? Randolph the Egg, humble chicken-rearer, can't afford to employ bodyguards.
</p>
<p>
This is partly because of the way statistics tend to work in games. It's generally something like: 0-50% nothing, 51-70% elderly wolf, 71-80% 1d4+1 orc scouts, 81-90% wolf-mounted orcs, 91-99% orc wizard and bodyguards, 100% frenzied wyvern. Randolph has to go to market once a week, every week of his life. Over the course of these hundreds of trips, he'll encounter even the most improbable result on the encounter table. Meanwhile, dangerous monsters are <b>more</b> likely to show up in remote rural areas, exactly where the people are generally poor and infrastructure is minimal (that's what makes them rural, after all).
</p>
<p>
Randolph has little chance of a long-term career in a world where random encounters affect NPCs as well as PCs. Even PCs will get fed up of needing a balanced party and full combat gear to take the dog for a walk. This is to say nothing of dating. And if the wilderness is full of these dangers, there are easily enough bandits and monsters to wipe out the little villages, homesteads and shrines that RPGs love to scatter around.
</p>
<p>
Of course, the answer to this is that random encounters <b>don't</b> affect NPCs the way they do adventurers, or indeed at all. That's how the world keeps ticking along smoothly. Everyone knows the woods are full of terrible dangers, but Randolph still sells his eggs every week, little Masie picks flowers in the borders of the forest, and hunting rabbits does not require a 10-strong party of crossbow-wielding poachers clad in full plate.
</p>
<p>
Why, though? It'd be satisfying to have some in-world explanation for this phenomenon.
</p>
<p>
There are a couple of options I can think of.
</p>
<h3>
Protagonists are Special
</h3>
<p>
There's something about PCs that attracts dangers. This works well in a mythic or fate-ridden setting, where monsters and challengers <b>are</b> drawn to confront heroes, perhaps sent by the gods themselves to test the PCs' mettle or as part of some Olympian political strife. It can also work in an honour-bound setting where most opponents are <b>people</b>, rather than beasts - especially if the typical peasant has nothing worth stealing. Of course the bandits only ambush victims who look like they can afford it, and are too proud to raise a hand against simple peasants. Of course the wandering fairy knight issues a lethal challenge to the heroes, while merely glowering at farmers who've never touched a blade.
</p>
<p>
In magic-heavy settings, random encounters might be attracted by the PCs' power. This can be as metaphysical as being "drawn to those with power", or as tangible as "can smell the potions on you". Since PCs tend to carry magical bling and travellers not so much, this can explain away the discrepancy. Where the setting features enigmatic Dark Forces, it's in-genre for those to direct trouble at the PCs specifically, without worrying too much about exactly how they do it.
</p>
<p>
In sci-fi, there's a lot of variety as to what exactly the random encounters might be. If they're space pirates or robot bandits, they can again be attracted by the PCs' gear (using various "scanners" to pick out worthwhile targets). Intelligent aliens or imperial oppressors alike may know the PCs are their enemies, and actively hunt them while ignoring the civilians.
</p>
<h3>
Protagonists are Outsiders
</h3>
<p>
An alternative is that normal people have some protection which the PCs are exempt from. For a non-fantasy example, consider an occupying force facing popular guerilla warfare. The PCs are in danger when they leave their bases, especially to head out into remote areas. Civilians aren't necessarily sympathisers with the freedom fighters, but they're much less likely to be attacked (with obvious caveats for any real-world conflict).
</p>
<p>
In fantastical settings, people living in an area long-term may be spiritually 'part of' the land in a way that the PCs aren't. Growing up on the local water, air, and produce might align their auras with the local ley lines, making them less visible to monsters. They might be watched over by spirits who know them from birth, especially if the culture treats with those spirits or performs rituals to them. Regular participation in village rituals might build up layers of divine or magical protection over the years. Adventurers have none of those, making them stick out like sore thumbs. New things are interesting! New things are dangerous.
</p>
<p>
Monsters might simply ignore familiar and harmless locals. Semi-intelligent creatures might do so from an instinct to avoid disturbing the local ecosystem, ensuring a long-term habitable territory (and, in the case of man-eaters, sufficient food). Fully-sentient beings might have a tacit agreement that they won't harm well-behaved villagers, and in return, the villagers won't mob up and hunt them with flaming torches, nor call in the Royal Wizard-Knights. Monsters that are dangerous but don't actually hunt humans may learn the peasants are no threat to their territory. Those irritatingly shiny adventurers with unfamiliar smells, on the other hand...

A tradition is born, as Jaal begins Performing The Ritual, in <a href="https://archive.org/download/lnl_pfrpg_necropolitans/L%26L%20Necropolitans%20037%20Pop%20that%20on%20a%20pedestal%2C%20socially%2C%20and%20let%20you%20look%20at%20it.mp3">Episode 037: Pop That on a Pedestal, Socially</a>. He will continue to do so, at every inadvisable opportunity, despite the best efforts of everyone. One day, perhaps it will be the correct choice.

<p>
I can't remember if this is where I started weaving Lovecraftian elements into the campaign - well, obviously I started when I invented this location, but hints started getting dropped here. More will emerge over the next, er, four years or so of the campaign. I have no idea how much of this the players have noticed yet.
</p>
<p>
Alas too late, I realise that the episode title should have been the far superior "I got nothin'; he ain't got bones".

Every so often, I promise/threaten/vaguely imply that I'll write something and then it sort of drifts away into The Heap. This list is an attempt to get in control of that by maintaining a) any list at all, and b) something vaguely public that people can thwack me with.
</p>
<p>
If I said I'd write something and have failed to follow through, do comment below.
</p>
<a name='more'></a>
<h3>Actual commitments</h3>
<p>Things I have actually said I would write and need to get round to. But not contractually agreed because I am at least together enough not to let actual work slide.
</p>
<ol>
<li>A scenario for <i><a href="https://www.dreamrpg.com/">Dreamland</a></i>, for @Mockman
<li>[redacted] for GURPS.
</ol>
<h3>Fairly specific intentions</h3>
<p>Things I have talked about writing but haven't actually said I would.</p>
<ol>
<li>The third Mick Narsh scenario
<li>An actual scenario for <a href="https://librarians-and-leviathans.itch.io/brit-school-hijinks">Brit School Hijinks</a>, my 1980s-90s high school game
<li>Some part of a Dunkirk scenario with RogerBW
<li>A Ghatanathoah campaign for YronimosWhateley on YSDC
</ol>
<h3>Vague intentions</h3>
<p>Things I either want to write but have no concrete idea for, OR have a concrete idea but have not said I'd write.</p>
<ol>
<li>Industrial-themed scenarios for CoC.
<li>Something for Kale. "An adventure set in Flooded Lygon St". Requires learning Genesys and the Android setting, which is a minor obstacle.
</ol>
<h3>Pending</h3>
<p>
This one is for things I'm actually working on and their stage of development.
</p>
<ol>
<li>[redacted] for GURPS. Expressed interest, waiting for a response.
<li>Gaslight Lincolnshire II. Needs playtesting and then editorial stuff, layout etc.
<li>Gaslight Lincolnshire III. Partly written.
<li>[redacted] for Emrys on YSDC - about halfway through a first draft but it's <b>huge</b>.
<li>[redacted] for Emrys on YSDC - got a long way through and stalled, must return to this.
<li>Tetra Group 2. In revisions after playtest.
<li>Tetra Group 3. Virtually finished playtest edition.
<li><s>Inglenook's Bloodlines of Dubious Authenticity. Needs going over and artistic touches.</s> Published!
<li>Pathfinder Phantoms & Spiritualists supplement - rather lost motivation on these when PF2 came out honestly, even though I do not play PF2.

A staple of certain cinematic action films, particularly the superheroic type, is the environmental demolition attack. Rather than simply smacking someone round the face, you hurl them bodily into some major piece of infrastructure. What makes this distinct from grittier action is that our super-tough characters don't just crash painfully into the wall - they smash <i>through</i> it. In extreme examples of this trope, caped weirdos fling one another through half a dozen office blocks, leaving the victim briefly discombobulated and the buildings in a state of collapse.
</p>
<p>
In <a href="https://youtu.be/E9YHxbBjCTQ?t=77">this clip</a>, for example, Hellboy is smashed into the ground (and later through an assortment of historic artefacts and their displays, a window, and a dumpster) by Samael. Hellboy, being supernaturally durable, is lightly inconvenienced by the experience. The smashees, however, are absolutely wrecked.
</p>
<p>
I don't claim to be an expert in physics, but I don't think that's how it works. But if it did, how would we do it in a game?
</p>
<a name='more'></a>
<div class="quote-tangent">
<p>
Considering how often cities get absolutely wrecked by battling spandex fans, I don't understand why humanity in these settings hasn't done the logical thing and reverted to a rural existence. One thing about living in Lower Squalling is that gloating aliens virtually never piledrive a parrot-themed vigilante through your kitchen.
</p>
<p>
Also, it makes very little sense to me that Superman's first move in every fight isn't to relentlessly force the battle into the upper atmosphere, where there not only aren't thousands of people to get collateraly damaged, but also it's much harder to throw you painfully through a building.
</p>
</div>
<h3>GURPS</h3>
<p>
I start with GURPS, because I think it's the most likely game to have a robust set of mechanics to handle this sort of thing.
</p>
<p>
In GURPS, collision damage is pretty simple. You both take damage based on the HP of the opposing object and the speed of the collision (there are specific rules for smashing someone into an object as a melee attack, but let's leave those aside). A stone wall a mere 1' thick has 135 HP, plus DR 156 to absorb any damage. Assuming that an airborne Hellboy does not have an Armor Divisor - which is not necessarily a fair assumption, given his nature, but let's go with it - Samael will need to deal 291 damage to smash him through the wall.
</p>
<p>
Looking at page 431 of the GURPS Basic Set, we see that "An object in a collision inflicts dice of crushing damage equal to (HP x velocity)/100." One die inflicts an average of 3.5 damage, so we'll need 84 dice to break that wall. Reversing the damage formula, HP x Velocity = 8400. This gives a lot of options. If Hellboy has 100 HP, for example - just slightly more than a <i>Brachiosaurus</i> - we only need hurl him at 84 yards per second, or a mere 168mph. Sadly, the speeds in the clip don't seem to get that high...
</p>
<p>
Anyway! What can we do to try and mimic this sort of "tough enough to break the walls" state?
</p>
<p>
Damage Resistance with Reflection seems the best option here. The collisions clearly do <i>some</i> damage, so buying DR with Tough Skin seems appropriate - and remember, most of these coves have a basic amount of DR already, which protects them from stabbing, shooting, punching, etc. - we're stacking our Wall Resistance on top of that! Can't Wear Armour is also pretty universal amongst these types. Finally, "environmental collision" is probably a -40% Limited Defence, since it applies to several damage types (though mostly crushihng) but is only a small fraction of the overall hazards our hero faces. Let's throw on a -10% Super modifier, which can easily be swapped out for any other.
</p>
<p>
That still isn't going to make too much of a dent in that DR 156. What we need here is Armour Divisor, applied specifically to the reflected damage. Can we do that? Well, we are. A divisor by 10 triples the cost of that already +100% Reflection enhancement... but we end up at 14 points per point of DR. It's not <i>awful</i>. Actually, we can probably make this a purely damage-displacing ability, swapping Reflection for a custom "Reflection Only, +0%" enhancement that mirrors some existing options for other powers. This means it doesn't <i>protect</i> us at all, and exists purely to make things smash when we get thrown into them. That's fine; our existing toughness should soak up the impact damage. We do need to drop Tough Skin, since our DR is already not protecting us from damage, overriding the effects of Tough Skin and making it an invalid limitation. Overall, the cost falls to a mere 11 points per point of DR. For a super-powered budget, that's doable.
</p>
<p>
Using the Brick stats from <i>GURPS Supers</i>, and assuming he's sent flying by a semi-truck travelling at top speed (55 y/s), impact from our anti-materiel Hellboy will do (20 x 55)/100 dice of damage, or 11d, for an average of 38 damage. More importantly, for the damage done <i>to</i> Hellboy:
</p>
<div class="quote-cite">
<p>If the immovable object is hard, use twice the HP of the moving object to calculate damage.</p>
</div>
<p>
Poor Hellboy is going to take 22d of damage, or 77 points. We'll need a lot of our special DR to absorb that - it'll cost 847 points, in fact. But if we pay for it, Hellboy now deals 77 points of damage to the stone wall, with the wall's DR treated as a mere 16 points. Overall, he does 61 + 38 = 99 points of damage to the stone wall, causing some serious damage, and reflecting what we see in the film. Brick walls are, incidentally, much easier to smash through (a mere 67 HP and DR 16 for a typical wall).
</p>
<p>
Note that with Multiplicative Modifiers (price up the power with all enhancements, then apply limitation discounts, rather than having them cancel out) this is a vastly more affordable 4 points per point. Still high for a niche ability, mind.
</p>
<h3>GURPS, mark 2</h3>
<p>
Another approach, suggested by Roger (thanks!) is to use Create with the Transmutation enhancement to temporarily turn solid materials into something more fragile.
</p>
<p>
I note that 1 cubic foot of sandstone is 150 lb., limestone is 165 lb., and granite is 175 lb. (according to <a href="https://rockvalleynaturalstone.com/helpful-calculations#:~:text=Sandstone%3A%20150%20lbs%2Fcu.,ft.">Rock Valley Natural Stone</a>).
</p>
<p>
Create allows up to 10 x (level squared) lb. per use, so to transform a single cubic foot of stone, we're looking at Create 4 or 5. In practice, we likely want to affect several cubic feet at a time to model the effects we see in superhero films, so let's assume 10 cubic feet, giving 1650 lb. This requires Create 13. To this, we add Transmutation Only (-100%) and Transmute Stone to Plywood. Transmutation uses the worse value of either the source or the target material - here, we want to turn stone into a much lighter substance, plywood, so that's not a problem.
</p>
<p>
The effect is incredibly brief - just long enough for the impact to resolve - and it can only be used for the purpose of how collisions work. This suggests Reduced Duration 1/10 (-20%) and Accessibility (Only for collisions, -60%). You can't use it to transform a wall and break through it, or anything utilitarian, only to influence what happens when you smack into a solid object. We also need Reflexive (+40%) to remove the need for concentration and have it take effect instantly.
</p>
<p>
Create normally affects matter within arm's reach, so let's also add Melee Non-Attack (-30%) to reflect that contact is required. While heroes certainly get winded by the experience, this is covered by the damage from the impact, so let's add Reduced Fatigue Cost 1 (+20%) to remove the need to spend fatigue. Finally, since this is a function of toughness rather than intellect, add Based on ST (+20%) to make the activation roll Strength-based.
</p>
<p>
For a neat 30 points, we can get Create 15, allowing us to convert up to 13 cu. ft. of granite into plywood for just long enough to smash it apart on collision. We can buy further options, like Transmute Brick to Styrofoam and Transmute Metal to Wax, as alternative abilities costing 6 points each.
</p>
<h3>GURPS, mark 3</h3>
<p>
Roger's suggestion pointed me towards another idea: Godlike Control (GURPS Powers, p. 92).
</p>
<p>
This allows you to manipulate abstract elements and properties, such as Space and Time. Canonical examples include Size (as part of Space), Chemical Processes, and Nuclear Processes.
</p>
<p>
Since Scale Alteration, the canonical example for Size (a Common subset of Space) affects density, it seems reasonable to affect <i>only</i> density as an Occasional subset. Using the rules for Control Size, Control Density grants an effective armour divisor against the target, and the opposite effect for the target's attacks.
</p>
<p>
Here, we're looking at Accessibility (Only for collisions, -60%) and Reflexive +(40%) as above. We also want Accessibility (Self Only, -20%), plus Accessibility (Only increase, -20%) since we can't make ourselves less dense to avoid damaging things we get thrown into! Normally Control increases radius with higher levels, but we don't need that, so the second and subsequent levels take Does not increase area of effect, -50% (cribbed from the Nuclear Suppression power). These therefore cost a mere 3 points each.
</p>
<p>
Using Scale Alteration as our model, every 2 levels of Control Density gives us a level of Armor Divisor and protects with a partial Armor Divisor. Control Density 8 will let us divide any DR by 100, while our own DR is multiplied by 100 (and we're always considered to have DR 1)!
</p>
<p>
At a mere 27 points, I think this is the most effective option.
</p>
<h3>GURPS, mark 4</h3>
<p>
Hopefully my final idea for GURPS is to turn this into an Affliction. Here, we need an Aura to make the attack trigger on impact, coupled with Melee Attack as a built-in requirement. We add a couple of limitations: Environmental Inanimate Objects Only (-60%) and Inadvertent Collisions Only (-60%), since it's not in-genre to use this <i>deliberately</i> to burst through walls. Unfortunately, Afflictions give an HT roll to resist and DR applies as a bonus - not a great option when facing objects with DR 100+!
</p>
<p>
There are several ways around this, but some (like Sense-Based) aren't appropriate for inanimate objects, and Irresistible Attack (which ignores DR) is too expensive. Malediction is a better option here, bypassing DR and turning the HT roll into a Quick Contest of Will vs. HT. Again, we'll want to add ST-Based (+20%) to reflect the genre mechanics.
</p>
<p>
So what about effects? Well, the idea here is that the Affliction makes our target fragile, so we want Negated Advantage (DR 50, Margin-Based, +750%) and Negated Advantage (HP 20, Margin-Based, +60%).
</p>
<p>
Overall, here's what it does: when a pig-faced demon throws you into a stone pillar, the Affliction triggers automatically. You roll a Quick Contest of your ST (probably quite high) vs. the pillar's HT (normally 12). If you win, for each point by which you won, you reduce the pillar's effective DR by 30 and HP by 20. This reduces the amount of damage you take on impact with moveable objects, but not our pillar. However, it does make it easier to smash the pillar - and "If the obstacle is breakable, the moving object cannot inflict or take more damage than the obstacle’s HP + DR", so the more we reduce those, the lower our maximum damage is. For example, assuming ST 17 (pretty low for most heroes of this type), we'd expect to win by 5 on average. We reduce DR and HP by 150 and 100 respectively - enough to negate both for a brick wall or 2" of mild steel, and reducing a 1'-thick stone wall to only DR 6. In all three cases, the object is likely to break apart while we take minimal damage.
</p>
<p>
This will cost 64 points, though tinkering with the values makes a big difference. If we have higher ST or Super-Effort, we can pay for less DR reduction and rely on the margin of success. For example, if we only reduce DR by 10 and HP by 5 x margin of victory, it costs a mere 31 points.
</p>
<h3>Pathfinder 1e</h3>
<p>
This kind of thing is <i>much</i> easier in Pathfinder, because you can easily define it as a feat or class feature.
</p>
<p><b>Shattering Impact</b></p>
<p><i>Thanks to your incredible toughness, stone walls and rocky floors are just another way to break a fall.</i></p>
<p>
Prerequisites: Damage reduction, Con 13, Great Fortitude, Toughness.
</p>
<p>
When you would take falling damage from collision with a solid object, make a Fortitude saving throw with a bonus equal to half the damage rolled. If you exceed the object's break DC, half the damage from the impact is converted to nonlethal damage, and the object takes that amount of damage, in addition to any damage the impact would already cause. Hardness applies as normal.</p>
<p>
If you cause enough damage to inflict the broken condition, reduce the lethal damage you take by half. If you destroy the object, halve the initial damage instead; your movement continues, but the impact absorbs 10 feet of movement for every 5 damage originally rolled. In the case of a fall, your effective fall distance is reduced by the same amount.
</p>
<p><b>Greater Shattering Impact</b></p>
<p>
<i>You can survive being thrown through a wall </i>
</p>
<p>
Prerequisites: Damage reduction, Con 13, Great Fortitude, Shattering Impact, Toughness.
</p>
<p>
Whenever you successfully absorb collision damage with Shattering Impact, you take only half damage from the impact, and half that damage is converted to nonlethal. If you break the object, that damage is halved again; if you destroy it, you take only the nonlethal damage.
</p>

The latest issue of sporadic GURPS fanzine <i>The Path of Cunning</i> is out, and I'm in it! My article looks at libraries, and how to model them in GURPS - which makes it sound more complicated than it is.
</p>
<a name='more'></a>
<p>
Basically, I drew on the existing Organizations rules to highlight some key aspects of libraries that a) are likely to come up in play, and b) distinguish one library from another. How comprehensive is their collection? How readily will they let you in? How easily can you <b>break</b> in? And so on. I also throw in an overview of the staff you might meet in a library and what they actually do.
</p>
<p>
You can find Issue 4 (and the previous issues, also worth a read) here: <a href="https://tekeli.li/path-of-cunning/">https://tekeli.li/path-of-cunning/</a>

Juggling lighting effects on virtual tabletop becomes confusing and, ironically, obfuscates everything. We learn that all creatures of the Earth subtype are stoners, and those of the Water subtype extremely wet, in <a href="https://archive.org/download/lnl_pfrpg_necropolitans/L%26L%20Necropolitans%20035%20My%20god%2C%20he%20has%20business%20cards.mp3">My god, he has business cards!</a>

Apologies for the echoing you can hear in this episode.</p>
<p>
Remembering the voices you used is hard enough in any game, and fortnightly or monthly sessions doesn't help. When the game runs for multiple years that gets much harder. I have vague notes on this sort of thing in my NPC spreadsheet nowadays.

We ponder whether phoenixes or gargoyles came first, and whether gargoyles are phoenixes of the ground or phoenixes are gargoyles of flame. I enjoyed the gargoyles, and the elemental beings in general.

We unexpectedly introduce Nathan to the <i>Paddington</i> universe, and interrogate very sleepy statues in <a href="https://archive.org/download/lnl_pfrpg_necropolitans/L%26L%20Necropolitans%20034%20Did%20we%20spend%20all%20of%20last%20session%20literally%20trying%20to%20cross%20this%20room.mp3">Did we spend all of last session literally trying to cross this room?</a> "Your accent wanders further than any accent has wandered before". We discover some spiders are also witches (bad).
</p>
<a name='more'></a>
<p>
Since Iris' whole shtick is fighting witches, I try to throw in hex-wielding adversaries at regular intervals. There was no real explanation for having your typical witch or shaman in the ancient, undisturbed catacombs of the Nameless City, which I've otherwise populated with magic, traps, immortal elementals and so on. This led to the creation of the Witchmite, a spider with innate hexing abilities. As the episode shows, they weren't a particularly effective threat, but they livened up the session a bit.

It's Makoa's turn to try and puzzle a way through an alien security system, in <a href="https://archive.org/download/lnl_pfrpg_necropolitans/L%26L%20Necropolitans%20033%20Ohhh%20yes%2C%20twice%20the%20purple%20fire.mp3">Ohhh yes, twice the purple flame!

<p>
The characters each faced a unique test. The principle behind this was actually pretty simple. The only way to enter the sanctum is through its teleportation, and it first teleports any visitor to a randomly-selected test chamber. Each test is designed to be *impossible* for the invaders, based on their specific biology and capabilities. Here, the most prominent feature is the invaders' total inability to sense magic; they can only attempt this puzzle through trial-and-error, and it would be virtually impossible to survive the process. Even understanding what the chamber *is* would be very challenging for them.
</p>
<p>
The reason for the randomisation is also simple. It means that if by some chance one of the invaders <b>does</b> manage to make it through, others can't follow them by just following their description of what they did. While I only provided three test chambers, in theory there are hundreds of variations. An individual invader has no idea what dangers or challenges they would face if they entered the chamber.
</p>
<p>
Since there's no sign the invaders made it into the sanctum, the plan clearly worked.

With the Whartson Hall crew, I'm running through a full playtest of my new modern weird mystery, <i>Invisible Fires</i>. So far things are going pretty well; they haven't run into any major roadblocks or immediately solved the mystery. Better yet, even the players who were leery of an investigation-heavy scenario with little action have been enthusiastic, which is high praise indeed.</p>
<p>
You can catch up on their progress - as well as the previous adventure, <i>The Wolf Who Cried Boy</i> - over at <a href="https://discussion.tekeli.li/t/tetra-group-the-wolf-who-cried-boy-invisible-fires/1740/17">Tekeli.li</a> if you don't mind spoilers for something I intend to publish this year.</p>Shimmin Beghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10350037986748679919noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-533573536330092840.post-14830997240703447222023-04-18T13:21:00.002+01:002023-04-18T13:39:05.630+01:00Podcast: the Redacted Reports<p>
One of the various podcasts I've been listening to recently is <a href="https://www.theredactedreportspodcast.com/">The Redacted Reports</a>.
</p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifB0NLL4TnCOmXLBr-bNqg3GO2EVWdAgor5IeP6yylHN3RgMQsZfPrx2IfSH3-fsYDxjMXXWIKeYtOqwltvrh1to-QzqdEefH0iG0NMbx6bor7CW7GT0dHiqcQbSiA4RE2FSUGtYoU7YLlxkJd1eUDTWh0EATdvT64ZfHWHjvGSaSTh4SqG3v8JyuU/s1000/TRR+Square+Logo.png" style="display: block; padding: 1em 0; text-align: center; "><img alt="" border="0" width="320" data-original-height="1000" data-original-width="1000" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifB0NLL4TnCOmXLBr-bNqg3GO2EVWdAgor5IeP6yylHN3RgMQsZfPrx2IfSH3-fsYDxjMXXWIKeYtOqwltvrh1to-QzqdEefH0iG0NMbx6bor7CW7GT0dHiqcQbSiA4RE2FSUGtYoU7YLlxkJd1eUDTWh0EATdvT64ZfHWHjvGSaSTh4SqG3v8JyuU/s320/TRR+Square+Logo.png"/></a></div>
<p>
TRR is a Delta Green podcast, so we're talking an X-files vibe but more conspiratorial. Members of various branches of the US government - in this case including the military, FBI, and the EPA - are secretly recruited for an off-the-books task force investigating deeply weird things.
</p>
<p>
Disclaimer: I have mixed feelings about <i>Delta Green</i> as a game. In fairness, I haven't played it! I've listened to quite a lot of actual play, including the good folks over at <a href="http://actualplay.roleplayingpublicradio.com/category/systems/call-of-cthulhu/delta-green/">Roleplaying Public Radio (RPPR)</a> and some others I'll write about soon. Personally, some aspects don't work for me; they're drawing on specific genre points that I don't particularly enjoy, so this is just a case of Your Milage May Vary.</p>
<p>1. The game has a model where the strain of dealing with weirdness and violence slowly shreds your human connections, destroying bonds to the people in your life and isolating you; perhaps realistic, but I find it depressing, and I play games to be <i>less</i> depressed.
</p>
<p>2. DG leans heavily into the American style of government, which is to say, all the law enforcement characters (and a bunch of others) are armed and prepared to kill. Characters tend to be military, ex-military-, FBI and police. The game as a whole, and many APs, tend to assume that armed violence is both expected and a necessary, effective approach to dealing with the weird conspiracies they're facing. Killing civilians and witnesses is a regrettable necessily - it may grind down the characters' sanity, but it's <i>a grim necessity and morally justifiable</i>, not an abhorrent absolute last resort.
</p>
<p>
But those are about the game and setting as a whole, and every group runs things differently! I do enjoy listening to DG games for the most part, even the scenarios I wouldn't want to run.
</p>
<p>
<b>Worth noting:</b> this <i>is</i> a Cthulhu, Delta Green podcast, so it does involve violence, death, and bad things happening to people. It isn't the kind of podcast that relishes the grisly details, but they do come up. In particular, the Shrimp Farm arc has a very violent climax, while Idaho deals with sex, violence, and (in a minor way) self-harm. One PC is a survivor of cult abduction, and another has war-related trauma. Abduction comes up in at least two other cases. I'm not getting into any details here, but thought I should flag it up for anyone considering trying the podcast. My feeling is that they handle these subjects well and with consideration.
</p>
<a name='more'></a>
<p>
So, <i>The Redacted Reports</i>.
</p>
<p>
First up, this is an audio-only podcast. Joy! I have no interest in the video strand of roleplaying podcasts that has emerged; it's simply not my thing. So for those who share my preference, be reassured, <i>The Redacted Reports</i> are for your ears only.
</p>
<p>
I started listening a while back, I think about halfway through Shrimp Farm (one of the missions). The characters (and players) quickly earned my affection. I enjoyed right off the bat that two of the characters were a medic (Rory) and an environmental scientist for the EPA (River), and the FBI agent (Rowan) was firmly of the investigative rather than murderous type. Even Rooster, the 'generic marine' of the group, has nuance and depth that plays out over the course of several seasons and becomes a firm favourite.
</p>
<h3>About the campaign</h3>
<p>
The group play with some subtlety and humanity. Each case is approached as something they can potentially 'win', and they avoid the callousness that can easily become default in the DG setting. Deaths are unavoidable, but wherever possible, R Cell try to save lives and resolve problems with brains rather than violence.
</p>
<p>
The seasons cover a good range of different mysteries and themes. Aliens, cults, horrors from the depths of the wilderness, weird science, space-time weirdness, psychic powers, folk horror, drugs, and conspiracies all come into play across the course of the campaign so far. There are occasional interconnections and shoutouts to past history, but not enough to become Byzantine; it feels to me that it adds a sense of pleasing depth to the campaign and makes it seem more real. However, it might not be to everyone's taste. The GM, Dan, clearly puts a lot of thought into things, laying down teasers and clues in advance that crop up substantially later.
</p>
<p>
There's a definite strand of oobly weirdness to this version of the DG universe. There are time/reality shenanigans of some kind, and at least one minor character seems to be prophetic - though not in a particularly controllable or always helpful way. Again, if not your thing, you may not enjoy it so much. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of time/reality weirdness (I got tired of the Tom Holt books because that was their main shtick, for example) and here it hasn't bothered me.
</p>
<p>
The investigations are a mixture of prewritten scenarios and homebrew content, usually in combination. The podcast does flag up which scenarios are in play (usually at the end of each recording) so you can double-check you aren't listening to a scenario you're currently playing, and so on.
</p>
<h3>Metagame stuff</h3>
<p>
The group makes full use of the "Downtime" mechanic that explores what happens to characters between missions. Their personal lives are clearly important, and the people in those lives just as much. If you're in it for the scenarios, bear that in mind. However, it's worth noting that the personal and DG lives <b>do</b> cross over at times, sometimes in dramatic ways - particularly for Rowan.
</p>
<p>
<i>The Redacted Reports</i> is primarily a traditional game, with events dictated by what happens at the table and with the dice. The downtime sessions are more freeform, and at times there are more narrative story-focused sections. It never seems to move into full-blown "story first" territory, which is a relief for me - I'm not much interested in listening to a preplanned story with a veneer of gaming behind it. There <b>are</b> some specific elements that are planned, like character developments - such as what happens to Rooster - but it hasn't been an issue for me so far. The Rowan-focused arc is also largely a story interlude rather than a scenario, but again, it didn't bother me.
</p>
<p>
So far, I've enjoyed the podcast and I like the characters. I wasn't a fan of how Shrimp Farm ended (quite a downer), but for the most part I've had a good time and am looking forward to seeing what else the crew will do. I'm also still waiting to find out what's going on with that journalist from Shrimp Farm.
</p>
<p>
The crew have occasional Q&A sessions, which includes talking through decisions in- and out-of-character, how sensitive topics were handled, and so on. The players and GM make an effort to look into these topics, and address them without letting them become the focus of the game. For example, Rowan's history with cults clearly influences how she deals with related cases, while Rooster's trauma affects how he relates to the rest of the team, as well as making him the designated driver.
</p>
<h3>Audio</h3>
<p>
<i>The Redacted Reports</i> has good, clear audio. I don't know their exact recording setup, but it's easy to hear everyone and tell who's speaking, and there is very little cross-talk. The players speak clearly. I mostly listen to podcasts while walking beside busy roads on my commute, through cheap earphones; I haven't had any trouble following the podcast. Similarly, the volume is pretty consistent - I haven't had any horrible audio spikes (on another podcast, someone's inexplicably unedited Suddenly Dog! nearly sent me falling under a lorry).
</p>
<p>
I'm generally a no-frills audience - I got started on <a href="https://tekeli.li/whartson-hall/">Whartson Hall</a> ("put a recorder on the table and press play, it'll be fine") and <a href="https://www.yog-sothoth.com/">YSDC</a> (high quality, no SFX). <i>The Redacted Reports</i> does have some editing and music, but not to a level that I personally find intrusive. It doesn't interfere with the actual gameplay, and they don't jam it with SFX in an attempt to make it a full-blown audio drama.
</p>
<h3>Overall</h3>
<p>
As you can guess by the fact I'm discussing it here, I like <i>The Redacted Reports</i> and am happy to recommend it to fans of weird investigation RPGs.

Security is contextual! Jaal confronts the peculiar magical security system of the Nameless City <a href="https://archive.org/download/lnl_pfrpg_necropolitans/L%26L%20Necropolitans%20031%20Doing%20full%20frilled%20lizard.mp3">Episode 032: Jaal's Entrance Test</a>.

<a name='more'></a>
<p>
</p>
<p>
</p>
<p>
Since there's no sign the invaders made it into the sanctum, the plan clearly worked.

The Jet Jackal Quietener is a completely made-up creature of mine. It's a stony dog-like creature whose voice can nullify magic, decreasing the effective caster level of anything nearby. They're attracted to powerful and unstable magic, and like to lurk nearby to stabilize such phenomena.

Geometry is bad for wizards, "I've seen worse" is "technically a compliment", and we learn that Becca's Wis-based characters have a Wis of 12, in <a href="https://archive.org/download/lnl_pfrpg_necropolitans/L%26L%20Necropolitans%20030%20I%20look%20at%20her%20intently%2C%20staring%20without%20eyes.mp3">Episode 030: I look at her intently, staring without eyes</a>.

This one was fun. Some of you may realise I'm stealing this entire city from a Lovecraft story. However, in that it's relatively sane, geometrically speaking. I played with a lot of weird spatial things in this arc, and general alienness, to try and emphasize that these creatures were Very Old and trying to understand them - second-hand, through archaeology - was not going to be easy.
</p>
<p>
Each of the players had to survive an individual puzzle to reach the inner city. The inhabitants designed some very specific defences against a very specific enemy. I do explain this to them at some point later on...

A friend of mine has set up a website selling charming cards and illustrations, and I thought I'd give her a shout out: <a href="https://www.molittleart.com/">Mo Little Art</a>. Well worth going to check out the cute animals and striking colours even if you're not up for buying anything. Frog Soup is my current favourite.
